Henry Jenkins on "new media"
What exactly is "new media"? New media is the new form of "old media". Old media was based off of printings or writings from magazines, articles, or newspapers. Where as, new media is based on digital technology or devices (such as cameras, computers, internet, and television). Who is Henry Jenkins? Henry Jenkins is the director of the "MIT Comparative media studies program". Also, an author and/or editor on various books about the aspect of media and popular cultures. Now, how is he qualified to discuss learning with new media? Henry Jenkins is qualified to discuss learning with new media by that he is the Peter de Florez Professor of humanities. He wrote monthly columns and blogged about media and cultural change fro Technology reviews online. Two key points from the video are; the participation gap and the blockage of learning from online. What is meant by those is that the participation gap is for children who can no access a camera, green screen or video camera. They are let out of the gap for expanding their learning or do what is needed to participate in the assignment. The blockage of learning from online is where the schooling system blocks certain websites because of their name. For example, you tube is something that should be allowed, it with-holds lots of information that is quite useful, and "moby dick" is banned just because of the word, "dick".
